Mainframe Resume Skills.

Some of your responsibilities will be the installation, maintenance, and support of all software applications.

You will also perform software upgrades and check that installations are complete and all working properly including developing accurate plansfor successful implementations.

You will be working closely with the staff to schedule installations, maintenance, and upgrades.

Supporting implementations as well developing new implementation ideas.

You will need to report problems with the software to vendors and get the corrective action then proceed to correct the problems.

You will need to have mainframe systems programming experience including expertise knowledge of TSO and JCL. - Including the knowledge of and working experience to customizing the software applications to fit your company’s requirements.

You need to have a thorough knowledge and understanding of software installation procedures using the SMP/E environment. Software installs, maintenance, and upgrades.

You would also need to have knowledge and understanding of  z/OS components including:

1. Data Transmission Facility (DTF)
2. Application Program Interface (API) User Interfaces
3. Sysplex Requester Facility (SRF)

You will be required to thoroughly understand the CD processes and be more than capable to build and modify each one: Generating and loading the Network Map, setting or changing the parameter values and any customization needed.

You will also need to be able to troubleshoot/diagnose failed processes and repair them.



How to Become a Software Developer.

Software mainframe developers need a bachelor’s degree, most common in computer science, or software engineering, or a related field.

Computer science degree programs would be your best bet, they will be teaching a wide variety of topics in this field. You should concentrate your efforts on classes that teach building software as this occupation will deal with a lot of creating software.

A master’s degree would be more preferable to most companies looking to hire.

Mainframe Developer Job Outlook.

Employment of software mainframe developers will grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is a very high growth rate compared to other occupations.

The medical insurance industry needs updated software to manage all the new healthcare policy enrollments after our government replaces what we now have in place. So working for the government could be an option to examine further. Demand for software developers will grow as they transition into the future.

Mainframe Developer Pay.

The median annual wage for software developers, systems software was $105,570 in May 2015.

The lowest 10 percent earned less than $64,600, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $159,850.

In May 2015, the median annual wages for software developers in the top industries in which they worked were as follows:

Computer and electronic product manufacturing $112,070
Software publishers 108,950
Finance and insurance 100,970 Management of companies and enterprises 98,330
Computer systems design and related services 97,590

Most software developers work full time, and long hours are common.
